This webinar establishes the foundation for all further genealogical research. It provides the beginning genealogist or family historian with the scope, understanding, and sources of information used to prepare a family tree or family history. It describes the uses and sources of Vital Statistics, Census Records, Land Records, and Probate Files, includes topics such as military records, church records, identifying female ancestors, importance of source documentation, newspapers, family portraits, obscure sources, and record preservation, and summarizes special types of records available to add body to the basic information. The workshop will explore how Ohio's system for treating persons with behavioral and developmental conditions developed and will focus on how to research a person's admission to and care in a State Hospital or State Institute. We will review the types of records that are available, including public, printed, and restricted sources. Discussion of how to use information sources in your research and what you should expect to learn from the records. Emphasis will be placed on collections available at the Ohio History Center in Columbus. Instructions for joining the webinar session will be provided to you before the workshop.

This session is ideal for those who want to find out more about the resources in the Ohio History Center's Archives/Library. This webinar presentation will briefly cover the military history resources at the Ohio Historical Society available for scholarly and genealogical research purposes. The session will include the organization of the early Ohio Militia and the Indian Wars that took place in Ohio before and after statehood, each major war in American history from the American Revolution to World War II. As a major collecting area, the Civil War will be covered in a little more depth than the other conflicts. Collections discussed include rosters, pension records, burial identification information, published sources, manuscript material, war commissions, uniforms and equipment, Ohio Adjutant Generals records, flags, and biographical information.
