Researchers typically refer to estate settlement information as finding a probate record, but did you know that the Probate Courts of Ohio were abolished with the state's 1802 Constitution and only came back into existence in 1851 when a new Ohio State Constitution was written? Between 1803 to 1851, the court system was different from our present day experience and those differences can affect how you research the distribution of a deceased person's estate. This presentation will describe records kept by Ohio's early courts including the Supreme Court in Bank, the Supreme Court on Circuit, County Courts of Common Pleas and Chancery Courts. Discover the importance of the Docket, Minutes, Case Files, Journal/Order Book, and Complete Record collections to your research. You will learn about the type of information that can be found or not found in each type of record.
Single class scheduled on 7/19/2014 at 10:30AM
This workshop will give researchers an orientation to the Kentucky Historical Society collections and programs, including the Kentucky Ancestors Online Portal, the historic markers program, and the cemetery locator database.
